Volunteer Standards of Conduct

Gender Boundaries

  • It is so important that we maintain appropriate boundaries with the students for the protection of the students, the volunteers, and the integrity of the program.
  • There is absolutely no flirting, physical or verbal, or engaging in romantic relationships with students.
  • Do not be alone in a room or car or counsel privately with a student of the opposite sex.

Speech

  • Our language should always be positive and uplifting; adding value to those who hear us.
  • Do not use profanity or ’off color’ jokes in the presence of the students you are working with.
  • Do not speak negatively about other students or adults (teachers, authority figures, parents, etc.) in the presence of the students you are working with.
    • Sarcasm and put–downs are not funny when they make someone else feel bad.

Character

  • Maintain a reputation of upholding the character traits of:
    • Honesty, Patience, Compassion, Respect, Perseverance, & Responsibility.
  • Choose the higher road in all of your dealings with students. You do not have to validate or participate in inappropriate behavior to connect with a young person’s world.

Equality

  • Treat everyone with the same love and respect.
  • Never share prejudicial or discriminatory thoughts or feelings with students.
    • This would include, but not limited to, physical appearance, ethnicity, color, race, religion, gender, sexual identity, culture, personality, and intelligence.

Media

  • Always direct anyone from the media to contact Unite 4 Life directly.
  • Do not talk to the media about issues or stories regarding Unite 4 Life or situations at schools or with individuals unless you have received prior approval from the Unite 4 Life Executive Director.

Integrity

  • As volunteers of Unite 4 Life, we are role models for young people everywhere that we go. Be aware of the example that you are setting at all times.
  • Do not make promises to the students that you can’t keep.
    • Never promise secrecy in any conversation with a student.
    • Protect the student’s confidentiality by only sharing their information with Unite 4 Life officials, school officials, or law enforcement; not with your friends, family, co–workers, etc.

On–Campus

  • You are a guest of every school that invites Unite 4 Life onto their campus. It is both a great privilege and a great responsibility to serve on a school campus.
  • You must adhere to all regulations and guidelines as set by each school that we visit.

Alcohol & Tobacco

  • While self–control and moderation may not be areas of weakness for you, they can be for the young person who is looking up to you.
  • Refrain from the use of alcohol and tobacco while in the presence of the students you are working with.
  • If you are in public places, please use discretion when young people are present.

Illegal drugs

  • Use of illegal drugs is prohibited and will be cause for immediate termination.
