Depression is a state of feeling "low" or "down", but not necessarily sad. Most people when they are depressed can’t feel anything at all. They are numb emotionally. They feel like they are living under an unbearable weight or burden that they can’t get out of.
It can be described as feeling as ill as if you have the flu, but showing no symptoms.
Your natural ability to think rationally and behave calmly are not there when you need them.
A depressed person can feel isolated and can see no end to their condition. Depression has a beginning, middle, and an end. Most people can identify when it began. The problem is, when they are in the middle of it, they can’t see the end of it. They begin to believe they will feel that way forever.
Depression can be the result of a chemical imbalance, life circumstances, or the combination of both (see Types of Depression).
